WP U23’s beat more fancied Gauteng A!

After losing 14-0 to WP A in the morning fixture, Liall Mauritz (Head Coach) U23’s beat Gauteng A 6-4 at the South African Baseball Union’s Senior National Baseball Championship at Chukker Road Sports Complex in Cape Town.

A good display of pitching by Kieran Moore set up the surprise win. Moore pitched the full game, 7 innings, allowed 4 hits, gave up 3 walks and struck out 3 Gauteng A hitters. The combination of Moore and his catcher Josh Koen worked well as they kept most of the Gauteng A hitters off balance.

q2They were well supported with bats of Wesley Greeff 2 for 2 including a grand slam homerun in the 1st inning, Ashwin Kleintjies 2 for 2 and Nicholas Eagles 3 for 4 including a 2 run homerun in the 6th inning.
Gauteng A started their pitching with Damon King who could not complete the 1st inning. He walked the 1st 3 hitters, struck out the next 2, and then Wesley Greeff smashed him over the left field boundary for a grand slam homerun to give WP U23’s an early 4-0 lead.

He was replaced by Dylan Teixeira who settled everything down and pitched the rest of the game. Teixeira pitched 6.1 innings, allowed 6 hits (including 1 homerun), walked 1 hitter and struck out 5 hitters.
Gauteng A recorded 4 scattered hits with Adrian Blount (5th inning) and Brandon Bullion (7th inning) registering homerun’s.
Gauteng A were unable to capitalise on the 5 errors made by WP U23’s. Gauteng A made no errors.

Gauteng A redeemed themselves in the evening game when they came from 1-0 down to beat WP B 4-1 to clinch 2nd spot on the log.

Gauteng A down WP B

in the day of upsets, the valiant effort by WP U23 to beat Gauteng A came to naught. Gauteng found their straps and went seven innings against the strong WP B, to remind them that you need to play all seven to win. This left WP B in 2nd place but pushed WP U23 down to 4th and Gauteng A avoiding WP A in the Semi Finals.
